Barely a week after returning from Moyo ndi Mpamba Music for Life Festival, Mzuzu-based Afro-jazz artist Tiwonge Hango has set another gear, this time en route to officially launch his new singles Thyola and Mkazi wa Chimidzi in the Lake of Stars Music Festival slated to take place from September 26 to 28 at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi.

Hango, who is also the music tutor for 2012 Chibuku Road to Fame winners Lusubilo Band, said he has decided to launch his singles at the annual event so as to reach out to a larger audience.

“I have been invited to perform at the event, I feel privileged and have decided to utilise the same chance to officially launch my new music,” Hango said.

He said the event will be ideal for the launch as he will be able to reach an audience from across the continent and beyond.

“With Malawi voted as one of top 10 places to visit in 2014 by Lonely Planet, the event is likely to draw more audiences from across the continent and beyond. It has been my aim to penetrate the international market, I know that this year’s event will enable me to broaden my reach towards new audiences,” said the 27-year musician.

Mhango is the leading vocalist for Tikhu Vibrations, who are 2002 Music Crossroads winners.

From there, the artist made his debut in professional music, producing his first solo album Chinyengo under the mentorship of veteran singer Wambali Mkandawire.

Hango is not just an ordinary musician, having studied music at the prestigious University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom.

“After finishing my studies, a number of opportunities come in my way. I have been attached to a number of organisations such as Young in Prison, Amitofo Care Centre and music teacher at Mzuzu International Academy for four years,” he said.

“I wanted to make a difference, what I have seen is that music is not just instruments, but there is a need for research to find other ways of composing good tracks,” he says.

According to Hango the complete Thyola album will be released in November as most of the songs are ready.

He said during the Lake of Stars Festival he is prepared to show his best with a live performance that will challenge foreign artists so that they should appreciate and recognise Malawian art.
