President of the United Independent Party (UIP) Helen Singh has reopened debate on the need for the Recall Provision, which Parliament repealed in 1995, by promising to bring it back once voted into power.

The provision, which was Section 64 in the Constitution, empowered constituents to recall their parliamentarian if deemed ineffective.

Singh said this on Saturday last week during the official launch of her party at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre.

“The reason, we keep having the same faces at the heart of our political governance in the country is because these politicians have taken away all the power from people.

“What we need now is to empower people to break this cycle. What these old politicians have done is to take away all the powers from the people. Why did they repeal the Recall Provision? Why are they stifling Section 65?” wondered Singh.

Also promising to strengthen Section 65 of the crossing of the floor once voted into power, Singh also assured Malawians that her presidency will be defined by control of public expenditure.

“The convoy will only have three vehicles. I will only have 15 Cabinet ministers. We will give technocrats all the powers to make critical decisions in the running of government affairs,” she said.

On the cash -gate, Singh said Malawians need to commit the accused to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague.

“What is the difference? Some politicians kill people with their guns and they get committed to ICC. Here in Malawi we have seen how politicians, together with civil servants, have killed people in hospitals through stealing money meant for drugs.

“They have all killed and they should be committed to ICC to answer crimes against humanity,” said Singh.
