The United States Agency for International Development (Usaid) funded Health Policy Project (HPP) will fromThursday to Sunday next week camp in Machinga to court faith leaders on the need to adopt contraception and family planning methods to control overpopulation.

HPP population and family planning programme advisor Laston Mteka-Banda, said in an interview on Tuesdaythat his organisation is engaging faith leaders to mobilise believers on managing population growth.

He said the policy, in partnership with Usaid and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, has already conducted similar awareness campaigns in Balaka, Kasungu and Lilongwe.

“We are very worried with social and economic difficulties culminating from overpopulation. We feel it imperative to join hands with religious leaders in sensitising believers on the dangers of overpopulation individually and nationally,’ he explained.

At a recent population activity, head of Phalula Parish of the Catholic Church in Balaka Father Clemence Pindurani said God encourages couples to plan their families.
