Where is musician Elly K

For the past four months, musician-cum-dancer Ellen Kadango, alias Elly K, has been missing at shows, including those organised during the festive season.

Elly K, whose music character resembles that of Zambia’s Mampi, featured in all shows organised by Carlsberg Malawi and Entertainer’s Promotions last year.

When Channel O DJs raided Malawi for a performance, she was one of the few local artists that performed during the event.

As if that was a farewell, she disappeared from the music scene, which also prompted rumours that she had fallen out with her promoters as her disappearance came at a time when she was expected to release her debut album.

On the Arts tracked her down, only to discover that she silently sneaked out to South Africa for music projects and business ventures.

“I am not gone and have not fallen out with the people that support me. I was temporarily out of Malawi working on my music.

“It has been difficult for me to be on the road for performances while writing new songs,” she said.

She said South Africa-based DJ Flava has connected her to some producers in Johannesburg who are working on two of her songs which has kept her busy during the period.

She added that she is also reworking on some the songs in her debut album Ndikanakhala Nyerere which will now be released in June.

“Some songs that were meant to be in the album have been removed. I have reworked some and those being produced in South Africa will be in the album.

“Lulu will also help me on some songs and this means I will be missing on stage for the next few months,” she said.

Elly K added that she is working on videos of two songs.

Meanwhile, the Blantyre-based artist said she has ventured into entrepreneurship to support her career.

“I want to be independent. Most musicians struggle when their music fails to do well. I do not want the same to happen to me,” she said.
