Youths clicking to progress

A

s the world clicks, scrolls and swipes its way into a digital future, young Malawians cannot afford to be left behind.

Monday, August 12, was the International Youth Day.

This year’s theme, ‘From clicks to progress: youth digital pathways for sustainable development’, underscores the transformative power of digitalisation.

This is a clarion call for young people to seize the digital space to drive sustainable development.

The Malawi 2063 national development agenda emphasises the power of digital technologies to drive sustainable growth.

The youth in the country have the potential, energy, creativity and innovation to drive digital transformation by developing vital skills such as coding, data science, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital marketing to address prevailing challenges.

Collaborating and networking with global communities can facilitate the sharing of ideas and best practices, fostering international partnerships and access to global markets.

Globalisation opens a gateway to endless possibilities. Young Malawians can showcase local products, services and innovations to international audiences, adopting successful global strategies and adapting to our context.

This can spur trade, investment and cultural exchange for socio-economic growth.

Digitalisation enhances access to education through e-learning, digital resources and online mentorship, bridging the knowledge and skills gaps.

This can lead to a more educated and informed population well equipped to develop their country.

Moreover, digital entrepreneurship, e-commerce and online marketplaces can create jobs, stimulate innovation, boost economic growth and reduce poverty and inequality.

In healthcare, telemedicine, health apps and data analytics are transforming healthcare delivery, accessibility and outcomes, saving lives and improving well-being.

Digital solutions can also optimise resource management, monitor climate change, support eco-friendly practices and promote environmental sustainability.

Therefore, digital literacy and skills are essential for the youth to thrive in the digital age.

Initiatives such as the National Youth Policy and Inclusive Digital Transformation for Malawi (IDT4M) demonstrate the government’s commitment to empowering the youth and addressing their needs, including digital skills training.

Government and non-governmental organisations provide vital support services to promote digital inclusion and access to information.

However, the digital landscape remains underdeveloped.

While mobile phone penetration has increased, internet access remains limited, especially in rural areas.

Digital literacy is low and online safety concerns persist.

This digital divide exacerbates socio-economic inequalities, slowing the push for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Malawi 2063.

To build a digitally inclusive Malawi, investments in digital infrastructure are crucial, expanding access to rural areas.

Promoting digital literacy will equip the youth with industry-relevant skills.

Fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurship and start-ups will drive growth.

Creating a safe online environment and protecting users’ rights is essential.

Encouraging and empowering more girls to venture into the digital space requires an inclusive approach that tackles cultural and social barriers.

By developing a growth mindset, exploring online resources and communities, networking with mentors and peers, and prioritising online safety and digital citizenship, girls can build the skills and confidence to succeed.

Through active participation in hackathons, coding challenges and content creation girls can showcase their talents, amplify their voices and drive positive change.

By embracing lifelong learning and staying curious, girls can unlock their full potential, bridge the gender digital divide and become innovators and leaders in the digital world.

Draw inspiration from youthful Malawians making waves in the digital space. From innovative start-ups to impactful digital advocacy, young people are driving change. Their stories testify to their potential.

With the right support and resources, they can achieve greatness as Malawi’s digital future is just a click away.

It is time to scroll beyond excuses, swipe away obstacles and tap into innovation.

The clock is ticking. Click, share and demand change now.
