Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi (Fawema) has empowered youth networks in Nkhotakota to promote education in the district.

Speaking on Friday, Fawema monitoring and evaluation manager Thoko Phiri said they wanted to empower the youth with skills on how to engage relevant stakeholders to address challenges in the education sector.

She said during the meeting with the youth, they discussed a number of issues that affect quality education in the district.

“One of the issues is shortage of secondary schools as Nkhotakota has only one conventional secondary school which enrols 120 students a year,” said Phiri.

She said this is one of the issues that her organisation wants the youth to take up so that they get more conventional secondary schools to meet the demand.

Phiri observed that the shortage of community and conventional secondary schools affects girls’ education as they travel long distances to school.

Nkhotakota Youth Network publicity secretary Agnes Ndhlovu thanked Fawema for the training.

“We will now engage authorities to construct more secondary schools to accommodate more learners,” she said.

Nkhotakota district youth officer Aberson Mwale said the training empowered the youth to help find solutions in the education sector.

The training is expected to empower the youth to engage authorities to influence education decisions and policies that affect them.
