The Malawi Law Society (MLS) and Students Law Society (SLS) from the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College say assets declaration by public officers is the cornerstone of socio – economic development.

This observation was made recently in Zomba when the two bodies held a seminar with the councilors to drill them on the new Assets Declaration Act.

MLS representative Godfrey Kangaude encouraged the councilors to adhere to the bill if they are to impact their wards.

“The benefit is that local people will have confidence in you and you will be able to discharge duties with relative ease, joy and efficiency in view of the fact that declaration of assets signifies honesty of leaders,” he said.

Zomba Mayor Joana Ntaja hailed MLS and SLS for a timely intervention.

“This seminar has opened our eyes to perceive the significance of the bill of asset declaration,” she said.
