Zomba United coach Noel Gobede has declared that they will defy the odds and reach the finals of the K30 million Carlsberg Cup.

Gobede was speaking after his Southern Region Football League (SRFL) side pulled a 3-1 win over Blue Eagles at Nankhaka Stadium on Sunday.

Zomba will face fellow regional league side Support Battalion in the quarter-finals, but Gobede declared that they are focused on reaching the finals.

“We are thankful to God for making things happen for us. The secret behind our success was belief in the Lord and commitment.

“I am optimistic that we’ll reach the finals and Support Battalion should take extra care, they have a tall order,” said Gobede.

Zomba comfortably led 2-0 at interval through goals from Kenneth Kande and Patrick Luhanga before Precious Msosa added the third in the 60th minute. Eagles’ consolation was an own goal by Zomba’s defender Stanley Dube.

Zomba, Support Battalion and Dedza Young Soccer are currently the only lower league sides still in the competition while Dedza’s striker Ibrahim ‘Raul’ Imran is the current leading scorer with five goals.
