Big Bullets and Elia Kananji have agreed to a mutual termination of his contract which had three more months.
The People’s Team general secretary Harold Fote and Kananji himself confirmed the development in separate interviews yesterday.
Kananji and Bullets have had a stormy relationship since he was demoted two steps down the ladder to the position of second assistant coach on the basis that he did not have a CAF coaching licence, which is a requirement to coach in the continental club tournaments.
“We have indeed agreed to a mutual termination of the one-year contract with Kananji because, as we said, we could not afford his demands and the agreement was reached during a meeting we had with him yesterday [Thursday].
“We wish him all the best in all his future endevours,” said Fote.
Kananji said he saw it coming.
“I think it was already planned and that can be confirmed by events that have unfolded since the past three months also. They were just looking for an opportunity to get me out of the way and luckily for them, they had to use CAF tourney requirements.
“Even after my demotion, I took it calmly and told them that I was prepared to stay on, but when I asked for a review of my perks, they saw it as yet another chance to remove me. But such is life and I wish them all the best.
“Let it be known that I have no grudge against anyone at Bullets and I enjoyed a good working relationship with the players, the executive committee and the supporters,” said Kananji.
Obviously, Kananji said he will cherish his feat of ending Bullets’ nine-year Super League title drought as well as guiding them to win the Carlsberg Cup.
“Being named coach of the season was also another milestone,” he said.
On the way forward, Kananji said he will need time to reflect on his future.
“I just need a bit of time to rest and relax with my family, then I will start looking for a job,” he said.
Kananji was replaced by Burundian  mentor  Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan. n
