Divisions rock Bullets

Listen to this article

A feud has erupted in Big Bullets camp. On the one hand there are differences between a section of the executive committee and trustees while on the other, there are differences within the executive committee itself.

The team’s general secretary Harold Fote has accused the trustees of interfering with the running of the team, citing the suspension of a member of the executive committee and overruling some of the executive committee’s decisions as examples.

However, secretary to the trustees, Jim Kalua, dismissed Fote’s claims, saying some of the decisions the trustees make aim at bringing sanity in the management of the club.

Said Fote: “We no longer have the motivation to work effectively under the current trustees because there is a lot of interference.”

He also blamed the trustees of using divide-and-rule tactics, which he claimed created divisions within the executive committee, leading to the resignation of former treasurer Noel Lipipa and former main supporters committee chairperson Isaac Jomo Osman.

Fote also accused the trustees of interfering in the handling of finances, claiming that they grabbed K120 000 from proceeds of the Fomboni game, which they paid as allowances to trustees coming from outside Blantyre.

Kalua justified the trustees’ intervention, saying there are serious misunderstandings within the executive committee.

He said marketing head Dan Mbebuwa had to be suspended because there were allegations by some executive committee members that he had mismanaged funds.

To confirm the divisions that have rocked the team’s leadership, The Nation is in possession of a copy of a letter written by treasurer Brian Ligomeka and his deputy Alex Gondwe addressed to the trustees, which reads in part: “Allegations that we as treasurers of Big Bullets are unavailable for our duties are false and completely inaccurate. The major challenge at the moment is that we are systematically being sidelined, especially when some money is available and are only called to duty when the coffers have run completely dry.”

“Our submission has always been simple that even when that happens, the one who makes the payment is supposed to simply inform the treasurers so that the income and expenditure records are updated accordingly for the preparation of financial reports.”
