FMB Hockey League champions Genetrix have grabbed bronze at the six-team Easter Tournament in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Although this has not surpassed their 2013 achievement that saw them winning the Phoenix Championship in Zambia, it is a great improvement from their last international performance in 2016 when they finished fifth during an invitational tournament in Zambia.

In the latest event at Khumalo Hockey Stadium, Genetrix won three of their five preliminary round matches to qualify for the third-place play-off which they won 3-0 against Zimbabwe’s Rams. The preliminary encounters saw them beating Puma 8-0, Rams 2-1 and Khanimambo 1-0. They also suffered 0-2 and 0-3 defeats by MSU and Hippo Valley, respectively.

“We are very proud of our performance; it was an intense tournament, playing three games each day but we managed to put our heart and soul into each game,” said Genetrix team manager Chigomezgo Thindwa.

“It is the passion and love for the game that drive our team spirit. We cherish such experiences and opportunities to continue elevating our standard of play and have fun.”

Nevertheless, Genetrix coach-player Geoffrey Biya thanked Energem Petroleum Company and Nyasa Big Bullets chief executive officer for giving them financial support towards their Zimbabwe trip.

Energem gave the club 250 litres of fuel worth over K200 000 while Haiya gave them K50 000.

“We are grateful to Energem through their managing director Dan Vosloo and Haiya for helping us to make our trip happen. It could have been very difficult for us to travel to Zimbabwe had it not been for their support. We dedicate this bronze to them,” he said.
