Kunkuyu: Others should take over

Tourism, Wildlife and Culture Minister Moses Kunkuyu on Tuesday bade farewell to members of his Blantyre City South Constituency.
Kunkuyu told a Naotcha CCAP Church gathering that someone needed to take over the constituency, but fell short of explaining where he will stand as parliamentarian in the 2014 Tripartite Elections.

“It is with a heavy heart that I officially communicate to the church of this decision. I will not represent this constituency in next year’s Tripartite Elections.

Nonetheless, I remain the MP [Member of Parliament] for the area until we go to polls. I will continue with all planned projects between now and then,” he said.

The minister said his early announcement was necessary to give shadow MPs ample time to plan their campaigns.
Kunkukyu said his decision has already been communicated to People’s Party (PP) officials.

“We need leaders who will prioritise the interests of us all before promoting their selfish agendas,” he told the congregation.

Naotcha CCAP church moderator the Reverend James Bwanali Kanyochole said the church would respond to Kunkuyu’s decision later.

In an interview, Kunkuyu said he will soon announce his next course of action. However, his decision comes amid reports that he intends to stand in

Dedza South Constituency of former Malawi Congress Party president John Tembo.

President of Young Achievers for Development, Jefferson Milanzi, said his organisation will assess all the 14 aspirants that have emerged in Blantyre City South constituency.

“We are not interested in handouts, but people that have good agenda for developing the constituency. Should we fail to find a competitive aspirant among the 14 candidates, we will be forced to identify someone so that development continues in the constituency,” said Milanzi.

  1. Blessings (comment number 1) is Kunkuyu himself.

He has run out of ideas and is running away to Dedza. He will lose there as well.

  2. My advice to people of Blantyre City Constituency and perhaps to all Malawian voters. Choose an MP who will significantly contribute to the debates in Parliament and choose a councillor who will bring development to your constituencies.
