Lilongwe has new mayor

Members of Parliament and Ward Councilors from Lilongwe City have today elected ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councilor for Kawale 1 Ward Willie Chipondera as the new mayor for the city.

In a heavily contested election held at the Lilongwe Civic Centre, Chipondera floored Dr Desmond Bikoko of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) with 16 votes to 14.

The position of deputy mayor has gone to Akwame Bandawe an independent councilor who scooped 16 votes against William ngulube’s seven and Adamson Lipenga who amassed six votes.

Meanwhile, the elections for Blantyre City will be conducted tomorrow morning at the Civic Centre offices starting from 09.00am.

Four councilors, consisting of two each from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the independents’ block have confirmed maneuvering for the position of mayor.

The four are Getrude Chirambo and Noel Chalamanda (independents) and Alinane George Chipwete and Louis Ngalande from DPP.
