The Malawi cricket national team will take part in an international event for the first time in five years in March 2015.

However, they have been relegated to a lower division due to the impact of the ban the Malawi Cricket Union (MCU) suffered between 2010 and 2013.

The national team was promoted to the World Cricket League (WCL) Africa Division Two after winning the Division Three Tournament the country hosted in 2009.

But, according to MCU president, Vivek Ganesan, Malawi will face the impact of the ban it got from the African Cricket Association (ACA) due to mismanagement of funds meant for cricket development by the previous administration.

“We are back to square one. We will start our 2017 World Cup qualifiers in Division Three in Benoni, South Africa in March 2015,” said Ganesan. “Nevertheless, what is important is that we are back to international participation,” he said.

He added that four months are enough for the ‘transformed’ Malawi cricket to prepare for the international contest because they have put in place sound development structures.
