Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining plans to migrate from manual system of managing mineral tenements to cadastre or electronic platform once the Mines and Minerals Draft Bill is enacted into law.

This is one of the issues in the draft bill of the revised 1981 Mining Act, which has since been submitted to the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs for vetting.

The ministry’s spokesperson responsible for mining, Levy Undi, said in an interview this week the migration will present a significant change to the country’s mining sector.

“The system will assist the ministry in promoting accountability and transparency and also reduce the processing time by eliminating bottlenecks in internal procedures,” he said.

Malawi will become the 70th country to migrate to cadastre system with countries such as Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) already in the system. n
