Blantyre City Council (BCC) has chosen Be Forward Wanderers Football Club to play an international friendly match in Mozambique against Quelimane City team on August 21.

According to a letter from BCC dated August 14 2017 and signed by the mayor Wild Ndipo, addressed to the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) which The Nation has seen, BCC has been invited to attend 75th Anniversary Celebrations of Quelimane City to be held from August 18-27.

“Quelimane City Council also asked us to identify a Blantyre-based Super League team to play their city team on August 21 as part of the celebrations.

“Considering the current Super League table log standings, the council has identified Be Forward Wanderers to accompany the mayor and chief executive officer to the celebrations,” reads part of the letter.

It further states that Blantyre City is in the process of establishing sister city relationship with their Quelimane counterparts, “and our participation to these celebrations will cement our commitment to the twinning arrangement”.

BCC states that government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, has already approved that Wanderers should be part of the delegation.

“We are, therefore, seeking your permission to allow Be Forward Wanderers FC to travel to Quelimane on August 19 and return on August 22.”

FAM general secretary Alfred Gunda confirmed being in receipt of the letter, saying they have since forwarded it to the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) for consideration.

“We have forwarded it to Sulom so that when we clear the team, we should have their [Sulom] blessings and we are awaiting their response,” he said.

Wanderers general secretary Mike Butao also confirmed the invitation and said they are waiting for FAM’s direction.

The Nomads are supposed to travel to Mzuzu this weekend to face Mzuzu University (Mzuni) FC on Sunday. Before that, they are scheduled to face Moyale Barracks at Balaka Stadium tomorrow in league matches. n
