Joseph Suwedi held off Willet Kalonga on the Mulanje Golf Club greens on Sunday to win the Tea Brokers Golf Tournament.

Suwedi could have missed the glory had he not sank a birdie par on the final hole to complement the 11 pars he amassed along the way and put his tally at 41 points, a point ahead of Kalonga. Rajeev Rawat took the third slot with 38 points.

This was Suwedi’s fourth win in 12 golf contests this year. He last won a competition four months ago during the NBS Bank Monthly Mug event.

“I performed poorly on the back nine until that birdie saved me,” said the handicap-16 golfer, who collected 22 points on the front-nine and 19 on the back.

Roza Mbilizi was on song in the women’s category where she floored Carol Banda with 34 points. Banda, who found solace in hitting a two-club, collected 31 points.

Tea Brokers (Central Africa) Limited’s board chairperson Sangwani Hara said this was the 40th year to sponsor golf event in Mulanje to appreciate their cordial relationship with tea producing companies in the area.

“At first, only ladies took part in this event as we cherished the contribution of women to the growth of our business. As you know, it is mostly women who make most decisions in the kitchen, including making tea. We included men in the competition in 1992 to make our appreciation complete,” he said.
