UK announces K7.2 bn to Malawi for hunger

United Kingdom (UK) has today announced a whopping British £ 8.1 (about K7.2 billion) donation to Malawi to support families hit by hunger in the country this year.

The UK Minister for the Department for International Development (DfID) James Wharton, who is on a three-day visit to Malawi, made the announcement in Chikwawa after appreciating the impact of hunger and UK’s support towards hunger in coordination with other development partners.

UK’s donation comes at a time World Food Programme (WFP), which is championing the food distribution exercise in the country, is now giving beneficiaries rations due to financial problems. This year’s hunger has affected 6.5 million people. The donation will benefit 760 000 people. With this donation, UK has provided British Pound 43.1 million in humanitarian response to Malawi.
