‘Leaders should defend their faith’

Religious leaders in Malawi were on Friday asked to defend the Christian faith as they preach the word of God in their churches.

The call was made by Reverend Edward Mikwamba, chairperson of the Christian Apologetics movement, during the opening of a two-day conference in the commercial city of Blantyre.

“This is an interdenominational gathering of Apologetics. We expect to have leaders of churches and para-church organisations from over 300 denominations,” said Mikwamba,

He said lecturers and students of theological colleges, universities and other tertiary institutions are encouraged to attend the Christian occasion.

The conference has been organised by the Word of God Ministries International (WOG) in conjunction with Rapha Communications International and Bumas International.

Opening the conference, Reverend Vincent Chirwa of the Blantyre Baptist Church, who represented Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM), told the participants that they have a duty to defend the faith.

“The role of the church is to defend and uphold the body of Christ in all aspects such as human rights, abortions and same-sex marriages.

“Our role is critical, so equip other leaders with the skills gained here. Don’t just keep the information to yourself, but share it with others for the betterment of your church,” said Chirwa.

Dorothy Takomana, one of the participants, said the conference is crucial as it would empower the delegates spiritually to develop and defend their faith.

“We are benefiting a lot from the topics being presented here such as how the church should work with the State. We should also let the truth prevail so that God’s presence is made real and personal to one’s life,” said Takomana.
