1 year to elections
It is exactly a year to the September 16 2025 General Elections today and Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it is on track to deliver a credible poll.
MEC is expected to conduct a fresh voter registration exercise between October 21 and December 11 this year ahead of the vote.
To date, MEC has reviewed constituency and ward boundaries in an exercise that has increased parliamentary constituencies from 193 to 228. It has also adopted of the use of election management devices, recruited polling staff and sensitised stakeholders on the new electoral laws.
In an interview yesterday, MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the commission was on track to deliver a credible election.
“We have not experienced any shortfalls so this gives assurances that activities will be implemented according to schedule,” he said.
But in a separate interview yesterday, Malawi Electoral Support Network national coordinator Andrew Kachaso said there are still concerns regarding the issuance of national identity (ID) cards to eligible voters.
Section 4 (12) of the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections Act prescribes the national ID as the sole form of identification.
Political analysts Victor Chipofya and George Chaima also stressed the need to ensure a peaceful electoral process, saying violence could lead to instability.
The official campaign period for the elections is set to begin on July 17 and close on September 14 2025.
