1600 people get relief items

Darussunnah Foundation, in conjunction with the Muslim Association of Malawi, has donated relief items to 1 600 people affected by Tropical Storm Ana in Traditional Authority Jalasi in Mangochi District.

The items included rice, maize flour, beans, cooking oil, salt, sugar and kitchen utensils.

Speaking during the donation on Saturday, Darussunnah Foundation board secretary Hussein Mussa said they wanted to support the affected people to get back to their feet after the disaster.

He said: “We learned that the storm destroyed people’s houses and their property, leaving them helpless.

“So, we sourced funds from the Muhammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Global Initiative of the United Arab Emirates to complement government’s efforts to reach out to storm survivors.”

Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, who was the guest of honour, commended the foundation for the donation.

He said: “Government is also doing its best to ensure people affected by tropical storms Ana and Gombe get the necessary support.

One of the beneficiaries, Atumale John, said she lost everything during the disaster. She said the donation will help them dedicate more time to rebuilding their homes.

The organisation also plants to donate relief items to 1 600 people in Dedza. The donation in Mangochi and Dedza will cost K54 million.
