3 get 18 years each for robbery

Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court has sentenced three people to 18 years imprisonment each for robbery with violence.

The three are Daniel Chikalema, 34, Tony Khoko, 35, and Maxwell James, 23.

In a statement issued on Friday, Central West Region Police spokesperson Alfred Chinthere said the three robbed a taxi driver of his Toyota Sienta registration BX 6821 on December 22 2021 at Area 36 bypass near Dudu Estate in Lilongwe.

He said they also stole an Itel A45 cell phone and a driving licence from the victim.

Said Chinthere: “The three posed as customers and hired the driver to drop them somewhere.

“However, along the way, they hit the driver on the head with a hammer, tied his legs and dumped him in a nearby bush.”

He said the three were arrested following an investigation by the anti-motor vehicle theft unit under the Central West Regional Police.

The three pleaded guilty to the offence of robbery with violence contrary to Section 301 (2) of the Penal code.

In her ruling, senior resident magistrate Florence Msekandiana handed the three a custodial sentence to deter other would-be offenders.

Chikalema comes from Masasa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Wimbe in Kasungu District, Khoko comes from Mthindi Village, T/A Chimutu in Lilongwe District while James is from Chapotera Village, T/A Kumtaja in Blantyre District.
