3 women arrested for discussing investigations

Malawi Police Service have arrested Detective Susan Kachinga and two civilian women on suspicion that they are behind audio clips discussing ongoing murder cases investigations.

National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said in a statement yesterday that Kachinga was arrested on Monday in Blantyre along with Mercy Chiligo and Chipiliro Kalima.

He said the trio is expected to answer charges of cyber bullying and defamation of character under the Electronic Transactions and Cyber-Security Act and Penal Code respectively.

Said Kalaya: “They [three women] will be taken to court in Blantyre soon after their statements are taken.

“The service reminds Malawians that it is a criminal offence to author and circulate false information using electronic gadgets and the Internet, and that anyone involved will be arrested and prosecuted.”

In the audio clips that went viral on social media on Sunday, the women were heard narrating the status of the investigations in connection with the murder of Coca-Cola Beverages Company (Malawi) sales manager Alan Wittika and Reserve Bank of Malawi ICT and network manager Agnes Katengeza in Lilongwe.

Wittika and Katengeza’s bodies were found dumped in their respective cars in Area 15 and Area 47 respectively, in Lilongwe.

Police have since arrested Lester Maganga, a personal assistant to Minister of Information and Digitisation Moses Kunkuyu and Nigerian woman Annie Nwozuzu Chinyere in connection with the murders.
