5 die in road accident in Nkhotakota

A fatal road accident on Monday claimed five lives including three children in Malawi’s central district of Nkhotakota while 29 others sustained injuries.

The accident involved a minibus and pick-up near Ngala Trading Centre on the Dwangwa-Nkhata Bay M5 Road around 15.00hrs.

Malawi police have attributed the accident to over speeding.

Nkhunga Police Station Austin Kaunda quoting an eye witness Gift Buywell said that the driver of the pick-up wanted to overtake the minibus as they competed for passengers.

Kaunda said the driver of the pick-up in the course of overtaking spotted a woman and in an attempt to avoid hitting her, he lost control and vehicle swerved to the lane where there was minibus.

The two vehicles then collided and the minibus overturned three times.

“This caused total number of 29 people to sustain injuries. From that number three children died upon arriving at Ngala health centre Wanangwa Banda three months old, Dora Banda four years old and Happy Mikeasi four years old,” said Kaunda.

From Ngala, he said, 26 people were referred to Matiki Clinic where two more died upon arrival, a pick-up driver Christopher Bayasi from Mtupi area and James Phiri of Lonya village in the area of Traditional Authority Mankhambira in Nkhatabay.

Six others were referred to Nkhotakota District Hospital.

Police is advising drivers to drive carefully.
