The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) will send five of its top athletes from Mafco, Cobbe and Kamuzu Barracks to participate at the 2013 Mr. Malawi Bodybuilding Pageant.

MDF bodybuilding and weightlifting coach Evance Chikumbu said their athletes are currently in the gym shaping up for the contest which will take place on October 26 at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.

“We are ready to shine in this tournament. In recent contests, MDF bodybuilders used to finish on either second or third place, but this time around, we want to produce a champion,” he said.

Isaac Makiyi, Gift Mbendera, Francis Ng’ambi and Emmanuel Binauli are some of the MDF bodybuilders who are preparing for the contest.

However, King Jussab, a prominent MDF bodybuilder at Parachute Battalion in Salima and a regular at Mr. Malawi pageant, will not participate in the contest.

“Unfortunately, we will not have King Jussab as he is out of the country on deployment. He has been replaced by a young man from Kamuzu Barracks. But we are confident that the team we are sending will do the MDF proud,” said Chikumbu.

Weightlifting Association of Malawi (WAM) yesterday announced that 32 athletes have confirmed their participation in the country’s most glamorous bodybuilding contest.

The winner will take home K200 000 whereas the runner-up and third-placed will receive K150 000 and K100 000 respectively.
