Bingu property assessor adds cottage to list

Yeremia Chihana, the government-hired assessor of the wealth of former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika, says he has added a cottage in Mangochi to the deceased estate.
Chihana, who has been in the spotlight after releasing initial reports suggesting the former president’s wealth stood at about K61 billion (about $152m), on Sunday said he will be travelling to the resort district of Mangochi today for the full assessment of the cottage’s value.
Chihana, whose exercise has so far traced Bingu’s assets including bank accounts, vehicles and property both within Malawi and abroad, also said they have added a residential house in Lilongwe’s Area 36 along the M1 Road to Blantyre.
Following release of the reports of the former president’s alleged wealth, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which Mutharika founded, addressed a press conference in Lilongwe where party officials accused Chihana of fabricating figures for political mileage.
Chihana responded by suing the party and its spokesperson Nicholas Dausi for K200 million (about $500 000).
And DPP president Peter Mutharika sued Chihana for claiming that he (Peter) had a dual account with the former president. However, Chihana has filed a defence.
