Nine police officers on a presidential convoy have died in a horrific road accident today in Balaka, police have confirmed.
The officers, from Zomba, drove to Balaka to join the presidential convoy which was coming from Lilongwe to Machinga where President Peter Mutharika travelled for installation of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kapoloma.
The accident, Sauka said, happened at Chiyendausiku from where victims were rushed to Balaka District Hospital where other officers that were taken there alive died.
Other police sources said the Land Cruiser, which the officers were using, missed the road and rolled several times, throwing out and killing some of the officers on the spot.
The police sources said the vehicle was the last car on the presidential convoy, which normally cruises between 120 and 150 kilometres per hour, according to sources that have been privileged to be on the convoy.
Sauka said investigations were underway to establish what caused the accident.
May their Souls Rest in Eternal Peace
Why are there so many accidents on the roads of Malawi? As much as we sympathize with the loss of lives as in this situation and all others like it, answers to what’s causing these horrific tragedies are a matter of urgency!
120-150 kph: far too fast for safety. Ridiculous!
Too fast for you and me, but members of the police force receive training to drive at such a high speed. The cause of the accident must be established through a thorough investigation.
ok……120 -150 km/p/hr?
ali wa min bus kumugwira …….sichoncho?
The other problem that contribute to Road accidents in Malawi is poor roads.
