7 suspects bolt from Limbe Police
Seven suspects escaped from Limbe Police Station police cells at around 3am yesterday, according to police.
In an interview yesterday, Limbe Police Station spokesperson Chifundo Kansunje said police later re-arrested five of the suspects while the other two, whose identities have not been disclosed, were still at large as we went to press last evening.
She said: “It is still not known how the seven managed to escape from the highly-fortified police cells.”
Kansunje said the suspects will answer a fresh charge of escaping from lawful custody on top of the charges they were initially arrested for.
She appealed to the public to help the police arrest them by tipping of the police about suspicious faces in their locality.
This is not the first time suspects have escaped from police custody in Blantyre. In 2013, eight suspects, including hardcore criminals, escaped from Kabula Police Unit in the city after they had allegedly drilled a hole in the wall. n
