Aspirant attempts to register people in another district
As the second phase of voter registration is underway, a parliamentary aspirant was caught ferrying people from Ntchisi to Dowa for registration.
Annie Makuta from Dowa East and affiliated to the newly-launched United Transformation Movement (UTM) reportedly brought people to register at Chibadzi Centre before they were discovered.
At a meeting, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) organised, political party monitors said the aspirant took the registrants to Mtandawagalu Centre to register after they were rejected at Chibadzi.
The monitors said she admitted carrying them from Ntchisi to register in Dowa because it was also her home.
“The people I brought are my relations. They are my family. Both Dowa and Ntchisi are my home. My parents come from both Dowa and Ntchisi,” she said at the meeting.
Dowa East legislator Sam Kawale informed Ntchisi district commissioner (DC) James Manyetera, who alerted his counterpart in Dowa, Alex Mdooko.
The two DCs advised Makuta that what she did was unlawful.
She was also warned against causing any kind of disruption where electoral activities are taking place.
