APM says ready for election

President Peter Mutharika says he is ready for the fresh presidential election on Tuesday next week and that he will win as he did in the May 21 2019 nullified poll.

The President was speaking to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters yesterday on arrival in Lilongwe at Biwi Triangle.

Mutharika, who has been operating from the Southern Region since April, reiterated that the courts and opposition parties robbed him of victory in the May 21 2019 presidential election.

He said: “I am happy that I am back to the Central Region… You all know that we won the election. We crashed them and we beat them and they went to court. Does the court elect a President?”

On other issues, Mutharika, whose runningmate is United Democratic Front leader Atupele Muluzi, told the rally that the 2020/21 National Budget provides for cheaper farm inputs and loans.

But political commentator Humphrey Mvula faulted him for repetitively mentioning that he won the May 21 2019 presidential election when courts nullified it on grounds of serious irregularities.

He said: “It shows he is still going through the process of grieving and he is on the stage of denial. He seems to be a very angry person. Probably he is now realising that these issues are real.”

Mutharika’s political address yesterday was the first in the Central Region since the Malawi Electoral Commission officially launched the campaign season on May 7.

He will travel to the North tomorrow for more rallies until Saturday before the official campaign period ends on Sunday morning.
