CoM to hold Covid-19 virtual conference
As a way of responding and tackling different facets of the Covid-19 pandemic, College of Medicine (CoM), a constituent college of the University of Malawi, will host a series of virtual research dissemination conferences next week.
In a statement, CoM principal Dr Mwapatsa Mipando said the first series of the conference will be held from Thursday, October 22 to Friday, October 23 under the theme A Multidisciplinary Response to Covid-19 Pandemic.
He said: “The two-day conference will support discussions and reflect on addressing the Covid-19 pandemic. It will be opened by Minister of Health Khumbize Chiponda who is also co-chairperson of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 .
“Among others, participants will concentrate on Covid-19 pandemic thematic areas such as epidemiology and public health, clinical management, biomedical and environmental sciences, public engagement and communication, as well as mental health and psychology.”
On her part, conference organising committee co-chairperson Dr Cecilia Maliwichi-Nyirenda said during the conference, researchers will share findings from research studies on Covid-19 with a view to keeping the public, researchers and policy-makers informed on current research activities on the pandemic relevant to human health in the country.
“The conference will also provide researchers and professionals a platform for exchanging contemporary knowledge and building partnerships and collaborations,” she said.
Registration for the virtual research dissemination is being done online for free through the conference’s website (https://rdc.medcol.mw).
CoM organises research dissemination conferences yearly and the theme for the 23rd conference last year was Addressing Sustainable Development Goals Through Multidisciplinary Research.
However, the college is calling this year’s research dissemination conference “a special series” that has been specifically organised to respond to challenges and effects of Covid-19.
