Police Sacco renovates classroom block, donates computer to band

Malawi Police Savings and Credit Cooperative (Sacco) has renovated a classroom block which was declared inhabitable about five years ago at Police Secondary School in Zomba.

The Sacco also handed over a computer to be used by the Eastern Region Police Brass Band.

Speaking during the handover on Friday, MP Sacco board chairperson Noel Chalera said the initiative was part of the organisation’s corporate social responsibility.

He said the Sacco noted some challenges students and police brass band members were facing due to inadequate classroom and computers, respectively.

Said Chalera, who is also Commissioner of Police for Northern Region, said: “We are so happy as MP Sacco that we have contributed back to the community.

“Our children will now have a better environment  to learn. We have the responsibility to plough back, but the students and teachers have the responsibility to take care for the facility.”

Eastern Region Police Commissioner Violet Magwaya commended Police Sacco for the gesture, saying the computer will help the police brass band to move from manual storage to digital.

“We want bright students to come out from this school. Sometimes you are not motivated to learn in infrastructure that is in dilapidated state,” she said.

Police Sacco chief executive officer Ian Mwalungila said classroom renovation and the procurement of a new computer was estimated at about K4 million.

MP Sacco has 9 000 members from Malawi Police Service, Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Malawi Prisons Service and other public institutions
