Police drills kabaza operators in Ntchisi

Police in Ntchisi have organised a week-long training for kabaza (motorcycle taxi) operators to equip them with skills on responsible road usage with the aim of reducing road accidents in the district.

In an interview yesterday, Ntchisi Police Station public relations officer Salome Zgambo said the training will be conducted in different areas across the district.

She said: “We realised that most kabaza motorcycle operators do not have basic skills for road usage which are critical in prevention of road accidents. That is why we have embarked on this exercise.”

Zgambo said three people died last week from seven road accidents involving kabaza motorcycles in the district.

In his remarks, village head Chimwankhuku, who attended the first meeting at Ntchisi Boma, said he is hopeful that the training will help reduce accidents in his area.

“Alongside other traditional leaders, we have been having meetings with these kabaza operators but they have not yielded much. We hope that these training sessions will reduce the accidents involving kabaza operators.”

According to Zgambo, the kabaza operators will form groups whose leaders will receive further training to enable them support their peers to avert road accidents.
