9 killed in Easter road accidents
Police have said nine people died while 26 sustained injuries in 25 road accidents recorded during the Easter holidays in the country.
National Police deputy spokesperson Harry Namwaza said in a statement yesterday that the 25 accidents were five less than the 30 reported during the same period last year.

Reads the statement: “Nine people lost their lives in these accidents in 2025 compared to six fatalities recorded during the 2024 Easter holiday.
“Additionally, 26 individuals were injured in road accidents this year, a significant reduction from the 40 injuries reported during the 2024 Easter period.”
Namwaza added that most of the accidents happened during the night from Good Friday to Monday.
He said common traffic violations included 2 042 for exceeding carrying capacity, 753 cases of exceeding speed limit and 285 drink-driving.
The Malawi Police has since urged all road users to strictly adhere to Road Traffic Rules and Regulations to prevent avoidable accidents and save lives on Malawian roads.
Prior to Easter holiday, police said it had deployed police officers who were conducting both foot and motor vehicles patrols in communities and public roads.
