The national finals of the 2026 Mukuru Under-21 Netball Cup National Finals rolled into action yesterday in Blantyre with the sponsor expressing satisfaction with the role the contest has played in talent development.
The three-day national finals, played at Blantyre Sports Arena (BSA) and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) Sports Complex, marks the end of the competition that has run for two seasons as Mukuru Malawi announced they will not renew sponsorship.
The money transfer company’s marketing and partner lead Taleetha Jussab yesterday said they are incredibly proud of the journey the K60 million cup has taken this year with 44 teams and 669 young players participating across Malawi’s four regions.
At present, 12 teams are remaining in the race for the national trophy.
“This competition has once again demonstrated the incredible talent and passion that exists in women’s netball. We are proud to be part of that journey and support the development of Malawi’s next generation of netball stars,” she said.
“We wish every team the very best as they battle it out for the ultimate prize. But beyond the trophy, this tournament is about creating a platform for young women to showcase their talent, grow in confidence and inspire others.”
The national finals have pitted Mzimba Queens, Prison Queens and Tigresses Cubs in Group A while Dyna Queens, Giants Reserves and Unique Sisters are in Group B. Group C has Lydia Academy, Ekwendeni Reserves and Belinda Sisters whereas Group D comprises Kukoma Diamonds Reserves, Young Eagles and Mkumba Queens.
Yesterday, action began with Mzimba Queens defeating Prison Queens 56-24 while Dyna Queens outsmarted Giants Reserves 49-39.
Netball Association of Malawi general secretary Yamikani Kauma said the first day was meant for group matches while the second day today is for quarterfinals. The semi-finals, third-placed matches and the final will be played on Sunday.
Vanessa Sisters were the inaugural national champions after they defeated Young Eagles 48-35 in the final.
