Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of the Archdiocese of Blantyre has urged President Peter Mutharika to mend his relationship with Vice‑President Jane Mayemu Ansah, saying Malawi cannot afford divisions at the highest level of leadership.
He made the appeal on Saturday at Chisitu Parish in Mulanje District during the Archdiocese of Blantyre Catholic Women Association’s annual Umai wa Amai Maria celebrations, where Ansah was guest of honour.
The call comes amid growing concern over the strained relationship between Mutharika and Ansah, with the President in recent weeks delegating official functions to Second Vice‑President Enoch Chihana and Cabinet ministers.
Msusa said the situation was unhealthy for the country, stressing that Malawians need leaders who work together to tackle national challenges.
He called for unity among Mutharika, Ansah, and Chihana, describing it as vital in the fight against corruption and in advancing development.
“The unity will strengthen the fight against corruption and help Malawi move forward,” he said.
The Archbishop also praised Ansah for her humility in travelling to Chisitu Parish for the prayers and encouraged Catholics to take an active role in prayer and leadership within the Church.
In her remarks, Ansah thanked Mutharika for choosing her as his running mate and giving her the opportunity to serve as Vice‑President.
She said she remained honoured by his confidence during the campaign for the September 16 2025 presidential election.
Ansah urged Malawians not to believe what she described as fake news circulating on social media, saying respect for national leadership was consistent with her Christian faith.
She also called for more opportunities for women in leadership and encouraged them to work hard in their families, churches, government, and other institutions.
Ansah further urged women to raise children with good values, support one another, and maintain good character for the betterment of Malawi.
The annual Umai wa Amai Maria celebrations brought together Catholic women and other faithful to reflect on their faith, the role of women in the Church and society, and the values of prayer, leadership, and service.
