Chakwera commits to complete Zomba Stadium projects

President Lazurus Chakwera has committed to complete construction of the long-awaited Zomba Stadium project.

Chakwera, who did not specify on when the stadium will be completed, made the commitment yesterday in Zomba when he toured construction works at the stadium.

The president said despite moving the capital city to Lilongwe years back, Zomba deserves a stadium for sports, recreation and entertainment.

“I am fully charged to watch football soon at this stadium,” he said.

Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda said construction works are at an advanced stage.

He said the third phase of the construction of the stands on the eastern side of the stadium will start soon.

“Zomba deserves a sturdy stadium soon,” he said.

Zomba City mayor Christopher Jana expressed optimism that the presidential visit to the stadium will speed construction works.

“The residents are eager to have the stadium completed,” he said. The 20 000 capacity stadium construction works started in 2017.
