Do we really need to post ourselves clad in bikinis?

The recent trend of women posting their bikini-clad pictures on social media has sparked heated debates in our community. Proponents argue it boosts self-confidence and empowers women, while critics condemn it as immodest and ungodly.

Referring to the article  ‘Bikini-clad posts spark outrage’, Pastor Evance Mbewe, a renowned marriage counsellor, asserts that such behaviour contradicts biblical teachings (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Deuteronomy 22:5, 1 Timothy 2:9-10). Local woman Joyce Kamowa emphasizes that modesty commands respect and protects women’s dignity.

On his part, Amin Bamusi, a concerned community member, aptly notes, “When women post bikini-clad pictures, it sends a signal that they’re seeking attention and validation from men.”

Bamusi’s words resonate with Pastor Mbewe’s caution: “We must consider the consequences of our actions, especially in the digital age.”

As Joyce Kamowa adds: “Posting bikini-clad pictures is simply disrespecting your body and decreasing your value as a woman. Men will respect a woman who is covered, just like no one wants to eat uncovered food.”

Giving a scenario on the same issue, Pemphero Mphande recently shared a thought-provoking story on his page, highlighting the importance of online decorum. A beautiful, classy girl complained about her friends getting married while she remained single. Mphande advised her to reassess her online presence, noting that her provocative posts (miniskirts and booty selfies) and seductive behaviour (biting her tongue) attracted “hungry men” seeking casual encounters, not meaningful relationships.

Mphande’s insight underscores the significance of self-reflection and intentional online behaviour.

As a nation rooted in biblical values, we must reflect on our actions’ consequences. While embracing global trends, we must discerningly consider what aligns with our moral fabric.

In my view, as much as we strive to cope with Western culture, we must not forget our own cultural values. As a God-fearing country, let us always reflect on the Word of God and do what is right. Before posting, ask yourself: “Is this necessary?” and “Does it honour God and our heritage?” Moreover, let us not devalue ourselves by putting out nudity in public, which was meant to be private. Our bodies are sacred temples, deserving respect and dignity.

By sharing intimate parts of ourselves publicly, we compromise our worth and invite exploitation. Instead, let us promote modesty, respect, and inner beauty, upholding biblical standards and our nation’s moral foundation.
