Ministry geared to promote tourism investments
Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule says they are committed to promoting investments in tourism as the sector has immense potential to drive economic growth and job creation.
The minister was reacting to an article published on the World Bank website www.worldbank.org, titled ‘New data tools enhance the development effectiveness of tourism investments’, which states that the tourism sector carries huge potential to enhance economic growth and employment, particularly in developing countries.

This means that developing countries such as Malawi can leverage this potential to develop their economies and tackle unemployment.
In a written response on Monday, Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule said the Tourism Investment Master Plan has identified 103 promising projects, of which 10 have been classified as high-priority flagships.
“We are actively promoting these projects to attract both local and foreign investment, aiming to create jobs and boost economic contribution,” she said.
In an interview yesterday, Trek Mulanje chief executive officer David Majeweta, whose firm provide services in the tourism sector, said tourism plays a significant role in the country’s economic growth.
“Local people benefit greatly from tourism by finding business opportunities selling their products to tourists, which boosts their socio-economic status,” he said.
The tourism sector contributed about 9.1 percent to the country’s gross domestic product in 2024, according to the Malawi Government Annual Economic Report 2025.
