Sulom explains delayed man-of-the-match prizes

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says the delay to start presenting prize money to TNM Super League man-of-the-match awardees was due to logistical issues.

Sponsors of the flagship league, TNM plc, at the start of the season announced the introduction of K100 000 prize for man-of-the-match, covering all the 240 matches, translating to K24 million.

But the awardees only started getting their prizes mid this week, about 97 matches into the season.

Sulom vice-president Ronald Chiwaula cleared the air on the delay, saying: “The man-of-the-match package was not part of the initial K500 million sponsorship which TNM pumps into the league.

“So, we were still working on the logistics and I am glad to say the awardees have now been paid their dues, meaning we are starting on a clean slate.”

Sulom treasurer Alie Mwachande also confirmed that the prizes were deposited into the players’ accounts by Wednesday noon.

One of the players confirmed in an interview with Weekend Nation having received his prize.

He said: “Our worry was that since the league started, there was no proper explanation as to why we were not getting the prize money alongside the trophies.

“But it has now been sorted out.”

A source said Sulom is yet to get the prize money from the sponsor and it has used its funds which will be recovered once they get the funding from TNM.
