Silver move 5 places up after derby win

Silver Strikers maintained their capital city bragging rights after beating their rivals Civil Service United 2-0 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe yesterday.

The victory saw the champions move five places up the TNM Super League standings to sixth.

The Bankers’ man-of-the-moment Festus Duwe put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute after being set up by Chinsisi Maonga.

The Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored outfit doubled their lead in the 44th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Civil’s Blessings Juma fouled Emmanuel Allan.

Midfielder Chimwemwe Idana, who was named player-of-the-match, made no mistake from the penalty spot.

At the start of the second half, the Civil Servants made a double change, taking out Muhammad Biason and Damiano Kunje for Chikako Batson and Dustin Banda in a bid to strengthen their fire-power upfront.

Both teams created chances in this half, but there were no no more goals.

Civil remain 13th in the 16-team league with five points from seven matches.

Civil coach Abbas Makawa attributed the defeat to the early goal they conceded.

“Then we conceded the second goal after conceding a needless penalty and that put us off. In the second half, we were an improved side but the damage had already been done,” he said.

On his part, Silver coach peter Mgangira said: “Overall, it was a good performance. We created a lot of chances, especially in the first half. The derby victory is also a motivation, being the defending champions we need to be in good position.”
