Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says the early return of National Women’s Football Association chairperson Adelaide Migogo from the continental women’s football fiesta in Morocco was by design as she has another task to perform.
Her early return from Rabat, where she was part of the Scorchers’ delegation for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon), has stirred debate on social media with critics faulting FAM.
In an interview yesterday, FAM operations director Gomezgani Zakazaka said apart from the association’s president Fleetwood Haiya and FAM executive member as well as head of delegation Felister Dossi, all the other executive members who made the trip were informed that they would return home after the conclusion of the group stages as a cost-cutting measure.
He said: “It is not like she [Migogo] learnt about her early return while there. They were told before departure for Morocco. In fact, she returned alongside other ex-co members such as second vice-president Lameck Zetu Khonje, Daud Mtanthiko and Patrick Kapanga.
“Over and above that, madam Migogo has another task as she has to lead Silver Strikers Ladies FC delegation to Botswana next week for the CAF Champions League Cosafa Qualifying Tournament and, as such, she needs to prepare on the travel logistics.
“There was nothing sinister as it is being portrayed by some quarters.”
The Champions League Qualifying Tournament will run from August 20 to 29 in Gaborone.
Zakazaka also said apart from ex-co members, the group included chairpersons for FAM member associations.
Migogo could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Posting on his Fcebook page yesterday, immediate-past Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson Sunduzwayo Madise said: “When the Scorchers qualified for the quarter-finals, shouldn’t the delegation’s stay have been extended, especially the president of women’s football? It is rocket science, we need her in Morocco.”
