Local NGO dares marginalised women on entrepreneurship

Aiza Charitable Trust executive director Tara Khan has challenged women in Karonga District to grow and sustain their technical and entrepreneurship skills to attain economic independence.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday at the end of a five-day technical and entrepreneurship skills development training for women at Mwenilondo in the district, she said time has come for women to become catalysts of socio-economic growth and inspire other women in the area and beyond.

“With these skills, we hope this trading centre will become a place of economic transformation,” said Khan.

She pledged that Aiza and its partner, Helping Your Community Forum, will support and monitor the businesses.

“Our expectation therefore, is that these women are given the space, support and systems  to succeed and to sustain that success,” said Khan.

In an interview, village headman Mwenilondo urged the women to take care of the start-up capital so that they should graduate from poverty to prosperity.

One of the beneficiaries, Eldai Mwafulirwa, said the initiative will restore her dignity as a woman and make her economically independent.

Helping Your Community Forum founder David Ghambi urged the women to own the project for economic livelihood and growth.

“We trained these women in basic business, entrepreneurship skills and helped each woman develop her own business plan. Instead of handing out money, we went to the market with them, bought the exact materials they needed, and made sure everything was in place to launch their businesses,” he said
