Ministry declares MSCE exams ‘clean’

Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has declared the administration of the 2025 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations as clean.

The ministry cited smooth administration, discipline among candidates and coordinated support from stakeholders.

Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima made the declaration at the closing of the examinations at Bwaila Secondary School in Lilongwe on Friday.

“I am pleased to report that with coordinated efforts from all stakeholders, the examinations were administered smoothly and credibly, with minimal disruption,” she said.

The minister expressed confidence that it will serve as a benchmark for future examinations.

“Let this be our new standard moving forward—a Malawi where every learner can sit for their exams without fear, interference, or injustice,” said Wirima.

There were 202 940 candidates this year comprising 97 489 girls and 105 451 boys, figures the minister said were aligned with Malawi’s education and development goals.

“These numbers are not just statistics. They speak to our continued progress toward the goals outlined in the National Education Sector Investment Plan, especially in expanding equitable access to secondary education,” said Wirima.

Bwaila Secondary School head teacher Loyce Mponda testified that the institution administered the examination without serious hiccups.

The administration of MSCE has previously been marred by leakages with the latest incident reported on November 4 2020 when the examinations were cancelled following widespread leakage of some papers.
