Mangochi to benefit from Iceland’s K15.6bn funding

The Government of Iceland has endorsed the third phase of the Mangochi Basic Services Programme (MBSP) set to improve delivery of social services to people in the lakeshore district.

The K15.6 billion initiative—jointly funded by the Embassy of Iceland and the Government of Malawi—follows MBSP I (2012-2016) and MBSP II (2017-2025).

The first two phases improved access to essential services such as health and education in rural areas

The new phase, running from July 1 2025 to June 30 2028, seeks to consolidate earlier gains.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at Mangochi District Council’s chamber offices on Tuesday, Iceland’s head of mission David Bjarnason said the investment reflects their commitment to rural communities in Malawi.

He said: “Through the previous interventions, we have improved the lives of communities in Mangochi in the sectors of health, education, water and economic development.

“We want to build on those successes and ensure sustainability.”

Bjarnason said they helped the council to construct a maternity ward at the boma, health facilities and school blocks.

Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture Principal Secretary Esmie Kainja welcomed the project.

She urged the council to manage resources prudently to ensure the programme achieves its goals.

On his part, Mangochi district commissioner Davie Chigwenembe pledged transparency and accountability in the programme’s implementation.
