CCJP wants politicians to talk about food security
Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) of Karonga Diocese has challenged politicians in Chitipa to outline good plans to improve food security in the district.
In an interview on Thursday after a political debate that National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust organised at Nthalire in Chitipa South Constituency, CCJP programmes officer Moses Mwakisalu said many politicians fail to offer tangible solutions and clear strategies to improve food production.

“We partnered Nice Trust to conduct the debate to ensure that shadow candidates unveil their strategic plans on how they will safeguard constituents’ right to food to achieve food and nutrition security,” he said.
On his part, a prospective voter, Mirrium Nyondo commended CCJP and Nice Trust for the debate that tackled meaningful issues affecting locals.
Chitipa South Malawi Congress Party candidate Werani Chilenga blamed the poor crop harvest on poor accessibility to farm inputs, a market and the bad condition of Chitipa-Wenya-Nthalire Road.
“When the road is constructed, it will be easy to transport farm inputs to farmers,” he said.
Taking his turn, Democratic Progressive Party candidate Limbikani Mhango also attributed the worsening malnutrition levels in the area on bad road condition.
Nice Trust Chitipa district programmes officer Lusako Swira said they held the debate to give the electorate an opportunity to assess the candidates.
Nice Trust invited all three candidates for the debate but only Mhango and Chilenga turned up. However, independent candidate Chance Munthali did not come.
