G2G fuel expectedNovember—Nocma

National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma) Limited says fuel supplies under the government-to-government (G2G) arrangement are expected to be delivered in the first week of November and not September as initially projected.

Nocma spokesperson Raymond Likambale said in a written response yesterday that letters of credit for the second G2G fuel were established on August 29 and confirmed on September 9 2025.

Motorists queue for fuel amid acute shortage.

He said the 37 000 metric tonnes (MT) of fuel equivalent to 48 million litres comprises 20 000MT of petrol and 17 000MT diesel.

“The cost of the fuel is $30 million [about K52 billion] before logistical costs such as port harbour charges, inspections, storage and transportation,” said Likambale.

Nocma’s explanation comes weeks after outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera, in a public address on September

8 2025, said the second volume of the G2G fuel was scheduled to arrive at the end of August to aid supplies in September, particularly for smooth running of the September 16 General Election.

However, Chakwera said some unidentified people at Nocma conspired with unnamed agents to frustrate the arrangement and create a crisis so that they could allegedly cash in.

Yesterday, Likambale said a vessel to carry the consignment was identified and has already confirmed that it is aligned with port requirements.

He said the proposed berth window at Tanga port is from October 25 to 31, 2025, with the fuel expected to arrive in Malawi during the first week of November.

Transporters Association of Malawi spokesperson Frank Banda said in a separate inter view that they were yet to receive communication from Nocma regarding hauling of the G2G fuel.

He said normal fuel supplies were coming in from the Beira and Nacala routes in Mozambique, largely distributed to the Southern and Central regions.

In the past four years, Malawi has been experiencing chronic fuel scarcities largely attributed to shortage of foreign exchange.
