Sulom says sorry, but mum on other issues

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has apologised to sponsors FDH Bank plc, clubs and other stakeholders for the impasse that led to the postponement of the inaugural FDH Premiership launch at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

The postponement of the launch led to FDH Bank plc suspending all its sports sponsorship the following day.

But in statement yesterday, Sulom said: “Sulom wishes to sincerely apologise to FDH Bank Plc, teams, football stakeholders, and the general public for the unfortunate events that unfolded on Saturday, 25 April 2026 during the scheduled launch of the 2026 FDH Bank Premiership at Kamuzu Stadium.

“Sulom deeply regrets the disappointment and inconvenience caused by the failure to proceed with the highly anticipated league opener.

“Sulom  further extends its sincere apology to the government through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Football Association of Malawi [FAM] and all the other stakeholders who worked tirelessly to ensure that the concerns raised by FAM, which led to the closure of the stadium were addressed in time for the launch.”

The flagship league runners also clarified that at no point did FDH Bank plc as a sponsor impose the decision on the choice of venue “or interfering in any operational and administrative procedures of the league”.

Further reads the statement: “Sulom  made all the decisions in consideration of the best interests of the game and the value to be given to FDH as a partner, and all stakeholders in the game.

“As such, Sulom takes full responsibility for its decisions.

We are currently engaging our sponsors FDH Bank plc with a view to review the incident and develop strong strategies to avoid a repeat of the same.

“Sulom firmly believes that through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding, we can overcome this setback in the best interest of Malawian football because growth is for the game.”

But in an interview yesterday, Sulom president Gilbert Mittawa declined to comment on FAM’s decision to summon them for a disciplinary hearing for disregarding the ban on Kamuzu Stadium.

He could also not be drawn to comment on how they plan to compensate the fans who paid to watch the postponed launch game between Mighty Wanderers and Karonga United which grossed K16.4 million.

“No comment at the moment as all energy is on strategic engagement with our esteemed sponsor to make sure that football wins,” he said.

During a press conference in Blantyre on Sunday, FAM president Fleetwood Haiya said they will take a disciplinary action against their affiliate for disregarding the directive not to use the stadium which he said, was a violation of their statutes.
