Scorchers strike gold

The Scorchers are set to pocket over K36 million each in game bonuses and other allowances for their exploits at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, Morocco.

The Malawi Women’s National Football Team shone like a beacon in their maiden appearance at the African women’s football safari where they defied the odds to finish as runners-up.

The Scorchers were expected to receive about K8 million each from Football Association of Malawi (FAM) after winning four matches, but FAM is reportedly reviewing the stakes.

Initially, FAM president Fleetwood Haiya yesterday confirmed that they would provide the revised allowances in due course.

Before the start of the tournament, he announced that the players would get K2 million each for a win in the group stages and more in the knockout stages to fuel peak performance—a 400 percent increase from the normal K500 000 bonus.

“As a demonstration of our confidence in this team, FAM has introduced a K2 million [each] winning bonus per player for every group-stage victory, with increased rewards for reaching the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final,” he said.

In the group stage, the Scorchers beat the Super Falcons of Nigeria 3-2 and Egypt’s Cleopatra 3-1. They went on to boot out Ghana’s Black Queens 2-1 in the quarter-finals before showing the Fennecs of Algeria 3-1 in the semis.

The Scorchers will also get K10 million each from the K500 million presented by their official sponsors National Bank of Malawi plc, K7 million each from NBS Bank plc and K5 million each from President Peter Mutharika.

That is nor all. The Scorchers are entitled to $100 (about K175 100) each as external travel allowance and for the 34 days they spent in Morocco, they will get about $3 400 (about K6 million each).

Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga said the Scorchers deserve the rewards for punching above their weight for the cause of their motherland.

She said: “The girls worked very hard and they deserve the recognition for their sweat. The team achieved beyond expectations, considering that it was our first time to compete at Wafcon.

“We thank God for Almighty for His blessings because without Him we could not have achieved all this. We also thank the first couple, FAM, government, our sponsors National Bank of Malawi [plc], NBS Bank [plc], Malawians and everyone who played a part in this journey.”

The Scorchers are also expected to get a cut from the $750 000 (about K1.3 billion) runners-up prize, but FAM operations director Gomezgani Zakazaka said in an interview yesterday that a determination will be made by the association’s executive committee.
