The Scorchers and Silver Strikers Ladies forward Deborah Henry is recovering after a successful surgery on a distal fibula fracture sustained in 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League Cosafa Qualifiers against Mozambique’s Costa do Sol in Gaborone, Botswana.
Silver Strikers Football Club said Henry underwent an open reduction and internal fixation operation to realign and stabilise the fractured bone.
“Following medical assessment, the forward underwent a surgical procedure to realign and stabilise the fractured bone.
“The surgery, which was performed last Thursday [September 3], was successful. Henry has now begun the first phase of her rehabilitation,” Silver said in a statement.
Before the continental regional showpiece, Henry had a remarkable domestic campaign, finishing as the inaugural National Bank of Malawi Women’s Premiership leading scorer with 23 goals which earned her Scorchers call up.
Silver said Henry’s return to competitive football will depend on the progress of her bone healing and functional recovery throughout rehabilitation.
“The club’s medical and performance teams will continue to monitor her progress and guide her rehabilitation at every stage,” the statement further reads.
In a related development, another Scorchers star, Sabina Thom, is also recovering well after undergoing surgery at her base in Morocco.
The winger sustained a knee injury during the Scorchers’ Women’s Africa Cup of Nations group match against Zambia’s Copper Queens and remained in Morocco after the tournament to undergo surgery.
Thom said she was looking forward to making a complete recovery.
“I want to sincerely thank the Football Association of Malawi for helping me undergo the surgery. Your support is truly appreciated,” she said.
